The loss of a loved one is never easy. For those left behind it’s a constant struggle to move on while still keeping your loved one alive in spirit. California-based artist Merry Coor has found the perfect way to keep the deceased close to your heart forever with her beautiful memorial ash bead necklaces.
Coor started making glass beads back in 2000, but her art form was forever changed last year after a young couple made a unique request. The couple asked her if she could add some ashes from their deceased friend into a bead for an extra special treasure.
Coor was delighted to make their request a reality. She writes on her Etsy page, “My bead making now gave me a new purpose, and a way to honor others, both living and passed. It was 80 degrees in my studio that day, but I had the chills the entire time I was making the beads.”
Coor creates her highly detailed and purely exquisite memorial ash bead necklaces by hand, one-by-one in her Eureka, California studio.
“If you decide to have me create an ash bead, I will send you a padded, pre-paid envelope, along with instructions and a small tin where you will place the ashes. Send me about ½ teaspoon of ashes for each bead and any photo, letter, or story about your loved one. When your bead is complete, you will receive within 2 to 4 weeks.”
Coor uses a torch, and rods of special colored silvered glass. She melts the glass in order to form a bead, and then adds the ashes into a spiral design on the bead. The entire bead design is then sealed and protected by a clear layer of glass.
Coor writes, “The colors are ethereal, like a planet or a universe, or the infinite heavens. Each individual bead is a unique and lasting gift – just like the memories of your loved one.”
