Take one look at Kiko the dog and you’re sure to fall in love, especially after hearing his story. Back in 2012, Kiko was featured all over the news after saving his owner’s life during a home invasion.
A man dressed up as a UPS delivery driver tried to break into Kiko’s former home in Staten, Island, New York. Kiko moved in to protect his owner and ultimately ended up taking a bullet to the head.
Miraculously, the bullet ricocheted off of his skull, and he was able to make a full recovery despite the fact he’s a senior dog. It sounds like the perfect happy ending to a suspenseful story but Kiko’s struggles continue. About two years ago, shortly after Kiko’s heroic act, his owner came up on tough times and was forced to move to a location Kiko wasn’t allowed.
Kiko saved his owner’s life and home, only to find he had no home at all. Thankfully, another miracle fell into Kiko’s life when Mighty Mutts heard his story. In 2014, Kiko was transferred into their excellent care. Mighty Mutts is a no-kill rescue organization dedicated to finding forever homes for cats and dogs in NYC.
Jill Haynes of Mighty Mutts said in an interview with The Dodo, “The first few weeks of adoption drives, it was obvious that Kiko was very confused, and just seemed to be looking for his owner. Initially we thought he was a little shut down, but after a bit of time we realized he was actually just completely deaf.”
Mighty Mutts remains unsure if Kiko is deaf due to the gunshot wound or if he has been deaf all of his life. Regardless, once they realized he was deaf it became much easier to bond with the loving dog.
“Kiko responds to touch rather than sound, and like most dogs enjoys a good back scratch. He is a more reserved dog than some of our others, which causes him to get overlooked frequently at adoption drives. But when he bonds with a volunteer and leans his head in for pets and scratches, it is the most endearing thing in the world.”

Nearly 1-½ years after Mighty Mutts was first blessed with Kiko they are still searching for his forever home. They say that his age, laidback demeanor and deafness work against him, but really shouldn’t. He’s an amazing dog that will stop at nothing to protect his family, as he has already proven. Plus, he’s a lot of fun, especially if you like to cuddle!

Kiko loves soft dog beds and rolling in the grass. He is 14-years-old and would be best suited in a home with no other pets, or at least no rowdy pets, or children. A one-story home is ideal since stairs are not easy at his age.
Mighty Mutts requires all homes are inspected prior to adoption, so the perfect family for Kiko needs to reside no more than 2 to 3 hours outside of NYC.
If you or anyone you know would be able to give Kiko the forever home he so very much deserves, go to the Might Mutts website for more information.
